1.1 Scope
BS ISO 4921 defines terms for basic knit. ting concepts.
1.2 Definitions
The definitions of BS ISO 4921 are cornpete in themselves: illustrations are used to clarify the content of a definition, but no standardization of any notational system is attempted.
1.3 Languages other than official languages
In addition to terms and definitions used in two of the three official ISO languages (English and French), BS ISO 4921 gives the equivalent terms and definitions in the German language (annex A) and the Italian language (annex B). these are published under the responsibllity of the member bodies for Germany (DIN) and Italy (UNI). However, only the terms and definitions given in the official languages can be considered as ISO terms and definitions.

2.1 Normative references
The fo4lowing standards contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of BS ISO 4921. At the time of publication, the editions indicated were valid. All standards are subject to revision, and parties to agreements based on BS ISO 4921 are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent editions of the standards indicated below. Members of IEC and ISO maintain registers of currently valid International Standards.

2.2 Abbreviations and labels
2.2.1 Languag. symbols
The language symbols recommended in ISO 639 have been used to indicate the language to which the term belongs. i.e. en (English); ft (Fr•nch).
2.2.2 Country symbols
When the term is not common to all countries indicated by the language symbol, a country symbol (put between oblique lines) has been added which is identical to the three-letter code of ISO 3166, e.g. IUSAI. /BEL/, /CHE(.
2.2.3 Evaluation of synonyms
In accordance with ISO 1951, the following method has been used to indicate the value of synonyms:

All illustrations designated (I) refer to welt-knitted fabrics and those designated (II) refer to warp-knitted fabrics.
